Transformer Maintenance

This photo shows a generator transformer that might be worked on during an outage. Technicians will do electrical performance testing to determine if degradation of the transformer core is occurring. Testing of the electrical supply and discharge is also done.

During operation, transformer performance is monitored by testing the cooling oil for certain gases. Gases, e.g. acetylene, hydrogen, methane, indicate whether the transformer is degrading. In addition,  temperatures, currents, and voltages are monitored.

The fans in the front blow air across oil coolers. The red piping in the foreground can provide a deluge spray on the transformer. The blue pipes at the top contain the bus bars that direct power from the generator to the transformer.
