Heavy Water Moderated Reactors - India

India has emphasized the heavy water moderated (HWM) reactor design (i.e. CANDU-type) in their program. The Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limted designs and operates the Indian reactors. Other than the 2 original BWR Tarapur reactors supplied by General Electric, the remaining 8 operating and 6 under construction reactors are of HWM design. The original was supplied by AECL. The remainder have or are being completed by India with internal resources. The figure below shows the location, type, and status of reactors and nuclear power related facilities in India.
